X Window System uses a client-server model to enable remote computing with graphic interface. In the Linux world, X Window System plays the role which provides the basic framework for building GUI environments. In addition to Windows 10 and VS Code, we need X Server and X Client to make VS Code work with WSL. Although the title of this article is ‘’ Using Visual Studio Code with Windows Subsystem for Linux’’, the method described here also works for other GUI applications. This article provides a step-by-step instruction to configure WSL so we can run VS Code on Linux with WSL. It is even possible we run Linux applications with GUI with WSL. We are also able to run Bash shell scripts and Linux applications on it. With WSL, we can install most major Linux distributions from the Windows Store. The WSL enables the ability for a developer to run Linux environment on Windows 10 without the overhead of a virtual machine.
